Why is the surf lesson in Ventura and not Santa Barbara?

Fun & Reliable Waves

Long & Gentle Surf Break

A Rewarding Experience

As much as we’d love to offer surf lessons in Santa Barbara year round it is simply unrealistic. Due to the Channel Islands and Santa Barbara’s unique south-facing topography it is rare that Santa Barbara will get surf-able waves. Because Santa Barbara can often times look more like a lake than an ocean with waves, we’ll teach many surf lessons in Ventura.

Ventura is home to some of the world’s most famous surf breaks such as Rincon; known as the Queen of the Coast. We likely won’t take you to Rincon as this break can be crowded and highly competitive. Our favorite surf break is a point break and beach break hybrid known as Mondos Beach. This Ventura surf spot is perfect for beginners and a great location for catching your first wave. We strongly believe that driving 20 minutes for high quality beginner waves is worth it for your experience.

What we don’t want is for this to happen during your entire lesson

What to Expect from a Ventura Surf Lesson

mondos beach surfing lesson

The first step in getting you on some waves is booking your private surf lesson. You can do that by paying on our website or with our team over the phone. Once booked we will send you detailed directions on where to meet your surf instructor. Most of the year we will be teaching at Mondos Beach at the northern tip of Ventura, California. We love this break because the wave is long and gentle; perfect for beginners looking for a smooth and easy wave to ride! Mondos Beach is also mighty consistent which means no matter what time of day you’re surfing we’ll most likely be able to get you up on the board.

As you arrive at the beach for your Ventura surf lesson keep a sharp eye out for our surf van. It it is a white box truck that is easy to spot. It has a big blue and green wave on both sides and says “Santa Barbara Surf School” in green lettering. Your private instructor will be waiting for you by the van with your very own Stormblade surfboard and 4/3 wetsuit from either Rip Curl or Buell.

Once you’re suited up your instructor will guide you to the sand for the beach instruction. During the beach portion of your lesson your instructor will provide expert advice on technique and body mechanics. If you have surfed in Ventura before your instructor can also provide advanced tips on wave awareness, timing, etiquette, and so much more.

We typically keep the beach portion of your surf lesson short and sweet so that we can allocate at least an hour in the water. Once you’re ready your instructor will help guide you in and push you over the waves.

At this point it is time for you to starting catching some waves! Your instructor will be with you in the water for the entirety of the lesson. That being said in order for your instructor to help push you into waves you will need to paddle back out. We only recommend taking a Ventura surf lesson if you know how to swim and are healthy enough to paddle in open ocean.

The team of Santa Barbara Surf School instructors are all about your experience. We started teaching surf lessons out of our love for the sport and our love of the waves in Ventura. We believe that your instructor is what completes the experience. But don’t just take our word for it, check out our hundreds of happy customer reviews on Trip Advisor. If you have any questions whatsoever before you book please do not hesitate to call.
